Tarascon, a town of history and legends

According to legend, Saint Martha of Bethany arrived in Tarascon, where the Tarasque, a terrible amphibian monster, was rampant. The saint courageously tames the beast. Since then, many pilgrims have visited the royal collegiate church of Sainte-Marthe, built in his honor near the Château du Roi René.

The Château du Roi René, built in 1400, is still exceptionally well preserved. It’s one of the most beautiful medieval castles in France. Transformed into a prison in the 16th century, it was the scene of many bloody events, notably during the French Revolution.

The town inspired other tales, in particular that of Tartarin de Tarascon, the famous character created by Alphonse Daudet in 1872. There’s a house dedicated to him in town, as well as a bronze statue.
