Founded in 500 B.C., the commune’s rich past is still visible in many places: beautiful, tastefully restored residences, Renaissance and 18th-century mansions, charming old streets, magnificent scenery… the village where Nostradamus was born has captured the hearts of many artists. Van Gogh stayed here and painted almost 150 canvases, musicians composed and writers wrote.

St Rémy is also a land of gastronomy: its olive oil crosses borders, and its vines produce an excellent AOC Les Baux de Provence wine.

What to do in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence?

With its rich cultural heritage, there are many places to visit in Saint-Rémy:

  • the archeological site of Glanum, a vestige of the Celtic, Gallo-Greek and Roman civilizations that once occupied the area;
  • the Saint-Paul de Mausolé monastery, a jewel of Provencal Romanesque art, famous for having welcomed and inspired Van Gogh in 1889,
  • the Musée des Alpilles, a museum of regional ethnology;
  • the Musée Estrine, housed in an 18th-century mansion, features paintings and graphic arts from the 20th and 21st centuries;
  • the Hôtel de Sade, home to the Glanum site’s collections;

But Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is also a lively town thanks to :

  • excursions on foot in the Alpilles, on mountain bikes or even on horseback,
  • the Transhumance festival on Whit Monday,
  • la féria: 4 days of Provençal bullfighting events in August,
  • the creators’ market every Tuesday evening from July to mid-September,
