Saint-Bénézet Bridge

The Pont d’Avignon is located, as its name suggests, in the town of Avignon in the Vaucluse département (84).

The Pont d’Avignon, also known as the Pont Saint-Bénèzet, was built between 1177 and 1185. It is one of the world’s best-known monuments, thanks to a song sung by children all over the world. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and welcomes almost 400,000 visitors a year.

Legend has it that little Benoît, better known as Bénézet, received a divine order to build a bridge in Avignon. In 1669, a flood on the Rhône destroyed several of the bridge’s arches.
