Festival d’Avignon, the largest theater festival in the world

It is in the city of the Popes that takes place every year, from mid-July to August, the famous Festival of Avignon, the largest gathering of theater and living art in the world. More than 1500 shows for more than 120,000 spectators for 19 days non-stop!

Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, it began with the presentation of only three creations in three different scenic locations over a week. It is from 1965 that the duration of the festival goes to one month and that shows begin to be added.
In 1966, an „off“ festival begins to emerge, a company that is not invited to the festival plays its representations at the Théâtre des Carmes. This movement is growing in the following years or little by little companies come to add, from around the world.
At the death of Vilar in 1971, 38 shows are then proposed on the sidelines of the festival. Each year, the number of companies present increases. Amateur and professional come to offer shows of all kinds for all tastes: classical theater, humorous show, one man show, comedia, tragedy, show for children … The atmosphere of the festival is also magical, the city is overflowing with actors, acrobats, dancers, who animate all the streets of the city center, playing excerpts of their show to promote it, evoking the crowd to attract to their representation. Avignon itself becomes a real stage show.
