More than 1,500 shows for over 120,000 spectators over 19 days non-stop!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, it began by presenting just three creations in three different venues over the course of a week. In 1965, the festival was extended to a month, and more shows were added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-fc-gut-lire-plus fc-desk\"><p class=\"has-text-align-left btn-lire-plus\">Lire plus<\/p><div class=\"content-lire-plus\">\n<p>In 1966, an &#8220;off&#8221; festival began to emerge, with companies not invited to the festival staging their performances at the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre des Carmes. This movement gained momentum in the following years, with companies from all over the world gradually joining in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Vilar died in 1971, 38 shows were offered alongside the festival. Every year, the number of companies present increases. Amateur and professional alike come to offer shows of all kinds to suit all tastes: classical theater, comedy, one-man shows, comedy, tragedy, children&#8217;s shows&#8230; The festival atmosphere is magical too, with the town invaded by comedians, acrobats and dancers, who liven up the streets of the town center, playing extracts from their show to promote it, luring the crowds to their performance.
