One of the few French cities to have preserved its ramparts and historic center, the Popes&#8217; Palace, the Episcopal complex and the Pont Saint-B\u00e9n\u00e9zet (Avignon Bridge) are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-fc-gut-lire-plus fc-desk\"><p class=\"has-text-align-left btn-lire-plus\">Read more<\/p><div class=\"content-lire-plus\">\n<p>Founded by the Phocaeans from Marseille around 539 BC, it became a Roman colony around 121 BC. The famous Pont d&#8217;Avignon was begun in 1177 and finished in 1185, with a length of 920 meters, a width of 4 meters and 22 arches. It was the only bridge crossing the Rh\u00f4ne between Lyon and the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Palace of the Popes, built from 1335 onwards, was to become the largest Gothic building in Europe, and is a must-see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Avignon is also known for its famous &#8220;Festival d&#8217;Avignon&#8221;, which has made it a capital of the performing arts since 1947! Dance, theater and music performances enliven the city streets.
